Late Run Lifts Monks Past Huskies, 13-8

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-1) defeated University of Southern Maine (1-1), 13-8, in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Deering Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening.

THE LEAD

In the first half, the Monks held the lead for all but the final three minutes as the Huskies capitalized on a man-up situation by netting a pair of goals, the latter being a Shauna Robert (Lyman, Maine) marker which tied the game at 6-6 heading into intermission.

The in state rivals swapped scores during the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, as the contest stood at an 8-8 deadlock after USM Sam Campobasso (Buxton, Maine) scored her second goal of the evening at the 20:51 mark. Exactly one minute later, St. Joe's senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) scored the eventual game winner, a tally that kick started a 5-0 run spanning 11 minutes with senior Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.) capping the outburst and the hosts holding a 13-8 lead with 8:35 remaining.

  • Sophomore Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) scored the Monks' first five goals and picked up a pair of draw controls
  • Gadbois tallied three goals, three assists, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers
  • Elcock registered a hat trick performance and scooped up two ground balls
  • Junior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) recorded a goal, two assists, five ground balls, and nine draw controls

  • Junior Lauren Lessard (Lewiston, Maine) scored twice with three ground balls
  • Senior Sarah Pelligrinelli (Southington, Conn.) netted a pair with an assist
  • Campobasso chipped in with a pair of goals and two ground balls
  • Junior Heather Everett (Waterboro, Maine) tallied a goal and an assist with four ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Freshman Hannah Lasalle (Humarock, Mass.) added two ground balls and three draw controls
  • Senior keeper Caley Presby (Portland, Maine/Deering) made eight saves in the losing effort

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's maintained the advantage in shots (29-22), ground balls (30-24), and draw controls (16-8) while successfully clearing on six of nine attempts on the evening. Southern Maine held a 7-6 caused turnovers edge and was successful on 11 of 20 clear attempts with a pair of man-up goals in a losing effort. Both teams committed 22 turnovers.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-7 all-time versus Southern Maine, a team the Monks defeated – for the first time - by a 15-12 margin last spring.

Both teams return to action Saturday when Saint Joseph's plays at Thomas College at 2:00 PM and Southern Maine hosts Endicott College in a 1:00 PM start.
