NEWTON, MA-The Saint Joseph's College of Maine women's lacrosse team left no doubt in their GNAC quarterfinal matchup, cruising past Lasell 17-5 on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field.
The third-seeded Monks (12-5, 9-2 GNAC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter and never looked back, overwhelming the sixth-seeded Lasers (12-6, 7-4 GNAC) with relentless pace and sharp execution on both ends of the field.
Mackenzie Siebert led the charge with six goals, while Taylor Dumond chipped in four goals and an assist. Shauna Clark added three goals and a helper as the Monks outshot Lasell 41-19.
Siebert opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game, with Dumond, Siebert again, and Celia Melanson adding to the early run. The Monks' defense didn't allow a single shot on goal in the first quarter.
Saint Joseph's kept up the pressure in the second quarter, scoring six more times to build a 10-3 lead by halftime. Goals came from Clark, Dinah Wadleigh, and another pair from Siebert. Lasell finally broke through with a goal midway through the frame, and added a buzzer-beater to give the Lasers a little momentum heading into the break.
The Monks didn't let up in the second half, outscoring Lasell 5-2 in the third and 2-0 in the fourth to lock up the win.
Saint Joseph's dominated nearly every category, winning the ground ball battle 27-15, edging Lasell 13-12 on draw controls, and forcing a whopping 35 turnovers. Morgan Wright finished with four saves in net, while Lasell's Joy Sayah stopped 13 shots in the loss.
Ava Molineaux turned in a standout performance, causing six turnovers and scooping up seven ground balls despite being hit with three green cards.
With the win, the Monks advance to the GNAC semifinals, where they'll take on the winner of Emmanuel vs. Regis quarterfinal.Â
