Monks Rally Past Eagles, 9-5

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University men's lacrosse dropped their fourth straight game to Saint Joseph's (Maine) by a score of 9-5 in non-conference action at Boucher Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Brandon Corbo gave Husson (0-5) their first opening goal of the season when he found the back of the net on a pass from Brett Martin at 13:04 mark of the first quarter. After Brooks Gay made the game 2-0 at 11:15, the Monks pulled to within one when Brendan Barrett put one past Husson goalie Matt Martin for a man-up goal with 5:23 remaining in the quarter.

Corbo and Martin extended the Eagle to lead to three with goals at 10:19 and 5:51 marks of the 2nd period before Jake O'Brien scored a late goal for Saint Joseph's (3-4) cutting the Husson lead to 4-2 at the intermission.

The Monks open the third quarter with five straight goals from Tom Lisiecki, two from Luigi Grimaldi, Joe O'Reilly, and O'Brien to take a 7-4 lead going into the fourth period.

After B. Martin scored the opening goal of the fourth with 12:03 remaining, the Monks put the game out reach on O'Brien's third of game at 9:10 and Mark LaPierre added an insurance goal at 6:36. The Monks held the Eagles scoreless for the remaining of the quarter for the 9-5 victory.

O'Brien netted three goals and assisted on two more, Grimaldi added two goals and an assist while LaPierre, Barrett, O'Reilly and Lisiecki each scored a goal for the Monks with Michael Finn, LaPierre, Barrett and Grimaldi adding an assist in the victory. Raymond Emery scooped up four ground balls and Connor Trainor made 14 saves in the net.

Corbo and B. Martin each scored two goals and had an assist for the Eagles, while Brooks Gay netted a goal with Derek Johnson adding an assist. Johnson led all players with seven groundballs and four caused turnovers while M. Martin stopped 17 shots and Nick Iannetti went 10-for-18 in the faceoff circle.

Husson and Saint Joseph's both took 34 shots and turnover over the ball 24 times in the game, but the Eagles won the ground ball battle 35-21. The Eagles were outstanding clearing the ball converting 21-of-23 clears while the Monks cleared the ball 21-of-28 times.

The Eagles will look to win their first game of season on Saturday, March 26 when they host Lyndon State for a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) game at Boucher Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saint Joseph's heads to Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Saturday as well for a 2:00 p.m. Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game.
