Raiders Hold Off Monks, 13-7

PORTLAND, Maine – Rivier University (9-5, 3-3 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-9, 2-4 GNAC), 13-7, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening.

THE LEAD

The Monks faced a 7-2 deficit heading into intermission and battled back into contention by scoring three goals in the first seven minutes of the third stanza. Following the SJC scoring burst, the Raiders staved off the hosts' comeback effort by netting a pair of markers in a matter of six seconds, an impressive feat that kicked off an 8-2 run spanning the remainder of play.

THE KEEPERS

  • Saint Joseph's sophomore goalie Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made 14 stops in the loss
  • Rivier senior netminder Clark Plummer (Londonderry, N.H.) tallied 11 saves on the evening

SJC HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sophomore Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.) tallied two goals and two assists
  • Freshman Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) registered two goals with an assist and a team-high six ground balls
  • Senior Jake O'Brien (Andover, Mass.) produced a goal and two assists
  • Junior Mark LaPierre (Wayland, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and an assist
  • Sophomore Liam Skinner (Irving, Texas) added three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers

RIVIER HIGHLIGHTS

  • Freshman Eric Guinasso (Pelham, N.H.) notched two goals, two assists, four ground balls, and two caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Ryan Coombs (Derry, N.H.) netted two goals and a pair of assists
  • Freshman Colby Larsen (Windham, N.H.) contributed two goals and four ground balls
  • Sophomore Liam Ryan (Dorchester, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of goals
  • Sophomore Joe Kelland (Watertown, Mass.) tallied a goal, two assists, and four ground balls
  • Sophomore Tyler Tambouris (Hooksett, N.H.) produced a goal and an assist with a 5-7 effort on face-offs
  • Senior Cody Lynch (Salem, N.H.) was 6-8 and freshman Chris Pennie (Wilmington, Mass.) went 7-8 on face-offs to help the Raiders post a decided 18-5 lead in the circle

TEAM STATS

Rivier led in shots (43-37), ground balls (39-18), and caused turnovers (8-6) while the Monks maintained a 20-23 lead in turnovers in a losing effort. Saint Joseph's hit pay dirt on three of eight man-up situations while holding the Raiders to a 1-3 power play performance.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 5-2 in the history of the series with Rivier University, a team that defeated the Monks by a 13-3 margin in Nashua last spring.

NEXT!

Both teams return to conference action this Saturday, when Saint Joseph's hosts Mount Ida College at Westerlea Way Field in a 1:00 PM start  while Rivier travels to Albertus Magnus College for a 1:00 PM GNAC tilt.
