Monks Sail Past Corsairs, 4-1

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Sophomore forward Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored two goals and added an assist to help Saint Joseph's College (8-3, 3-0 GNAC) topple UMass.-Dartmouth (4-6, 2-4 LEC), 4-1, in a non-conference field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Monks extend their winning streak to six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks controlled the pace of play throughout and claimed a 1-0 lead at the 9:05 mark when junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored off a rebound. Pomerleau netted what proved to be the game-winner eight minutes later with a shot past Corsairs senior keeper Allison Burke (Franklin, Mass.).

Sophomore Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) made it a 3-0 game with her first goal of the season – off an Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) pass – with a one-timed shot at the 20:32 mark.

Pomerleau tacked on her team-leading 12th goal of the year, with Caiazzo being credited with her second assist, 7:24 into the second frame. The Corsairs spoiled the Monks' shutout hopes in the 56th minute, when senior Haley Donahay (Cranston, R.I.) knocked in a high rebound off a corner play.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) posted a pair of saves in the SJC victory while Burke recorded 21 stops, including a handful of acrobatic efforts, in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held impressive leads in shots (38-6), shots on goal (28-3), and penalty corners (16-7) in the victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-0 in the history of the series with UMass.-Dartmouth. Last fall, the Monks edged the Corsairs, 1-0, in the first-ever meeting between the teams.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's begins a four-game road stretch Saturday with a key Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Lasell College starting at 4:00 PM.
