Monks Drop Season-Opener, 14-3

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- A balanced University of New England attack netted five goals in both the 2nd and 3rd quarters on the way to a 14-3 men's lacrosse win against Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 1) at the Big Blue Turf.

Dan Auger posted a game-high seven points to lead the Nor'easters (2-0), with a pair of scores and five assists. Three others also registered two goals -- Andrew Curro, J.T. Oliver, and Alex Zadworny.

Adding one apiece for the hosts were Pat Pohle, Remy Watt, Matthew Layton, Mitch Mullin, Collin Morrow, and Garett Bozek. Layton, along with Sean Conger and Sam Sahl, combined to go 13-of-20 in face-offs, and Curro scooped up five ground balls.

Pohle and Dan Giroux led UNE's defensive effort with six and three caused turnovers, respectively, and starting goalkeeper David Pearson made six saves in just over 51 minutes of work.

For the Monks (0-1), Brendan Barrett, Michael Finn, and Dan Cunningham each scored once. Wyatt Porter logged 11 saves during the initial 36 minutes, and shared the team-high of five ground balls with Liam Skinner.

The Nor'easters, who were up 5-0 midway through the 2nd period before conceding a goal, finished with a 52-20 advantage in shots.

Both teams return to action Saturday, when the Monks play at Salem State University (3:00 PM) and UNE hosts Plymouth State University (12:00 PM).
