Buccaneers Win Defensive Battle, 8-4

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (0-2) suffered an 8-4 loss at the hands of Massachusetts-Maritime (2-0) in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Leading 4-3 after Saint Joseph's junior midfielder Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.) netted an unassisted goal 55 seconds into the third quarter, the Buccaneers proceeded to net three unanswered markers and carried a four-score cushion into the fourth frame.

Saint Joseph's cut their deficit to 7-4 when sophomore Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) hit pay-dirt off a Joe O'Reilly (Suffern, N.Y.) pass with 2:12 remaining, but Mass.-Maritime responded just 11 seconds later with a Benjamin Avakian (Bourne, Mass.) strike to account for the 8-4 final.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) made six saves in the loss while Buccaneers sophomore Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.) registered four stops en route to picking up his second win of the season.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.) scored a man-up goal and dealt an assist
  • Sophomore Michael Finn (Quincy, Mass.) scored a goal
  • Sophomore Peter Wood (Gloucester, Mass.) collected a team-high four ground balls
  • Junior Tom Lisiecki (South Boston, Mass.) notched two ground balls and two caused turnovers

LEADERS – MASS.-MARITIME:

  • Junior Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.) netted a pair of goals with two assists and three ground balls
  • Sophomore Cody Livermore (Ludlow, Mass.) scored twice and was credited with an assist
  • Avakian tallied two goals and two ground balls
  • Junior Bobby Macarthy (Winchester, Mass.) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 0-3 all-time versus Massachusetts-Maritime. The Buccaneers defeated the Monks, 16-7, in Buzzards Bay last spring.
