Cadets Slip Past Monks, 11-8

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team picked up their sixth straight win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Monks of Saint Joseph's College by an 11-8 final score at Sabine Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.

The game started off as a defensive battle, as both teams struggled to break through the opposing defense. Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) punched in a man-up goal with just over a minute remaining in the second quarter to send the Cadets into the break with a narrow 3-2 lead.

In the third quarter, the two teams traded goals towards a 5-5 tie in the quarter as the Cadets managed to hold onto their narrow lead. Norwich put the game away in the fourth quarter by scoring three straight unanswered goals to extend their lead and seal up the 11-8 victory over the Monks.

Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) just kept on rolling, as the senior picked up three goals and an assist for a four-point game, as the back-to-back GNAC Player of the Week continued his stellar senior season. Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.), Kyle Maxim (Dracut, Mass.), and Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) all picked up two goals apiece for the Cadets on the afternoon.

The combination of Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) and Joseph Santangelo (Fallston, Md.) put up a dominating 17-23 mark on faceoffs on the day, and Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) made 13 saves between the pipes between the two of them.

For the Monks, freshman Glenn Dion (Pembroke, N.H.) potted a pair of goals while Tyler Brewster (Merrimack, N.H.), Matt Donnell (Watertown, Mass.), Peter Wood (Gloucester, Mass.), Tyler Retalic (Framingham, Mass.), Dan Cunningham (West Islip, N.Y.), and Zack Hamilton (Pepperell, Mass.) added a goal apiece.

Senior goalkeeper Connor Trainor (Franklin, Mass.) was solid in net and made 18 saves in the losing effort.

The win is the sixth in a row for NU, and all six have been GNAC victories. Norwich has set itself up well heading into the final week of the regular season, as they remain in the top spot in the conference standings. The final game of the regular season comes on April 25, when the Cadets host the Anna Maria AMCATS at Sabine Field. That game is set to get going at 4:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC-rival Rivier University on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
