Johnson & Wales Pushes Past Saint Joseph's, 20-8

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Reigning GNAC Champion Johnson & Wales University (10-4, 8-0 GNAC) surged past Saint Joseph's College (7-6, 6-3 GNAC), 20-8, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks faced an early 3-0 deficit but matched the Wildcats goal for goal the rest of the first half and trailed 8-5 heading into intermission.

Junior Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) and sophomore Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) both scored in the first eight minutes of the second stanza to cut the JWU lead to 9-7, but the Wildcats proceeded to rattle off 11 unanswered goals before sophomore Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) capped the game scoring with a free-position goal with 34 seconds left.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's freshman Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) made 23 saves in the losing effort while Johnson & Wales employed a pair of netminders in the triumph, with starter Ashley Stavalo (Manchester, N.J.) posting two saves in 28:46 minutes and Cassidy O'Hara (Mashpee, Mass.) turning away five shots in 31:14 minutes.

TEAM STATS:

Johnson & Wales held the lead in shots (49-19), ground balls (14-7), and turnovers (13-21) on the afternoon.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Ring led the SJC offense with three goals on four shots
  • Dexter added a goal and an assist with six draw controls
  • Beaulieu chipped in with a goal and an assist

LEADERS – JOHNSON & WALES:

  • Sophomore Marley Medina (South Hadley, Mass.) accumulated seven goals, two ground balls, two draw controls, an assist and a caused turnover
  • Senior Allison Pazienski (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied five goals, three assists, two ground balls and one caused turnover
  • Sophomore Dani Lydecker (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) had four goals, eight draw controls, two assists and two groundballs

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 4-3 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University.
