Saint Joseph's Routs Houghton, 19-7

WHITTIER, Calif. – Juniors Tyler Brewster (Merrimack, N.H.) and Glenn Dion (Pembroke, N.H.) netted four goals apiece to help launch Saint Joseph's College (3-1) past Houghton College (2-1), 19-7, at Whittier College on Thursday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks left little doubt as to which team would come away with the victory as the Royal Blue opened play with 10 unanswered goals and held an 11-3 cushion heading into halftime. Houghton scored twice in the first three minutes of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 11-5, but St. Joe's stemmed the Highlanders' momentum with four consecutive tallies and eight of the game's final 10 goals overall.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held the advantage in shots (54-36), shots on goal (47-33), ground balls (47-33), and face-off wins (16-13) and went 6-6 on man-up situations while clearing successfully on 17 of 24 attempts. Houghton was 1-4 in man-up scenarios and went 13-15 on clear bids.

THE KEEPERS:

All four of the Monks' goalies saw time in the victory with senior starter Edward Hellier (South Portland, Maine) picking up the win after stopping four of the five shots he faced in 21:36 minutes. Sophomore Michael Janocha (Southampton, Mass.) allowed two goals and made four saves in 8:24 minutes, freshman Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) gave up four goals and made three saves in 16:42 minutes, and first-year Giuseppe Brown (Gorham, Maine) steered away all five of the shots on frame in 13:18 minutes.

For Houghton, starter Jeremy Harris made five saves and allowed 13 goals in 35:23 minutes and Edmond St. Lawrence posted six saves and yielded six goals in 24:37 minutes of relief.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) scored two goals and was credited with four assists
  • Dion scored four with an assist and three ground balls
  • Brewster scored four times on six shots
  • Sophomore Zac LaRoche (Penacook, N.H.) tallied three goals, two assists, and two ground balls
  • Graduate Daniel Cunningham (West Islip, N.Y.) chipped in with a goal and two assists
  • Junior Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) netted a pair of goals with four ground balls
  • Senior Shane Fors (Ledyard, Conn.) added an assist with six ground balls and won 11 of 19 face-off attempts

LEADERS – HOUGHTON:

  • Nathan Anderson scored twice with 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers
  • Austin Andryshak scored a pair of goals
  • Kyle Diamond picked up four ground balls and was 12-27 on face-off attempts
