Saint Joseph's Shoots Past Norwich, 18-7

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Saint Joseph's College (6-2, 2-1 GNAC) toppled Norwich University (2-4, 0-3 GNAC), 18-7, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

­Clinging to a 4-3 lead after 10 minutes of play, the Monks netted seven unanswered goals during the remainder of the first half and held an 11-3 cushion heading into intermission. Junior Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) scored four goals and assisted on another during the 7-0 run.

St. Joe's continued to apply consistent offensive pressure after the break and forced running time when Dexter hit pay dirt again to make it a 14-4 game with 17:34 remaining.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (45-14), shots on goal (33-12), ground balls (20-17), draw controls (16-9), and caused turnovers (12-6) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior starter Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) made four saves in 49:55 minutes while senior Amanda Huang (Gray, Maine) stopped one shot in 10:05 minutes of relief. Norwich netminder Sydney Rocheville turned away 15 shots in the losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Dexter tallied six goals, four assists and three draw controls
  • Freshman Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) added three goals and three draw controls
  • First-year Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) netted three goals with three ground balls
  • Senior Jocelyn Moscato (West Haven, Conn.) scored a pair of goals
  • Huang, Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine), and Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.) posted two caused turnovers apiece

LEADERS – NORWICH:

  • Allison Sturgeon netted four goals on seven shots
  • Emily Schromm registered two goals and an assist with two ground balls and three draw controls

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 12-6 all-time versus Norwich University and has now defeated the Cadets in 11-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2013 campaign.
