Women Win, Men Place Third in 2022 Alpine Ski Opener

FARMINGTON, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College men's and women's Alpine Ski teams kicked off the 2022 season by participating in a slalom event at Titcomb Mountain in United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA) Reynolds Division action on Sunday afternoon. The SJC women won the event with a 4:14.27 total time and eight place points while the Monks' men finished third with a 3:58.04 team time and 19 place points.

All six of the SJC women finished in the top nine overall to help the Monks cruise to a dominant season-opening victory, as Saint Joseph's outpaced runner-up UMaine-Farmington (17 points), University of Maine (39 points), and New England College (69 points) on Sunday. Individuals from the Colby College, Bates College, and Bowdoin College club programs also competed in the slalom race.

Three SJC men placed in the top 10 as the Monks finished behind UMaine-Farmington (17 points) and Bowdoin (18 points) and ahead of UMaine (26 points). The Colby, Bates, and NEC men also raced in the 2022 opener.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

  • Competing in her first event for the Monks, sophomore Courtney Pingree (Marblehead, Mass.) claimed top individual honors with a 1:21.11 (40.02 – 41.09) composite time
  • Freshman Madelyn Zordan (New Hartford, Conn.) posted a 1:26.44 (42.42 – 44.02) total time, which was good for fourth overall
  • Sophomore Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.) finished fifth overall with a 1:26.72 (43.21 – 43.51) performance
  • Senior Sarah Hotchkiss (New Durham, N.H.) was ninth with a 1:31.33 (45.38 – 45.95) effort
  • Sophomore Maeghan Perkins (Turner, Maine) placed 10th (1:32.29, 46.28 – 46.01)
  • Freshman Lillian Souweine (Bangor, Maine) rounded out the SJC field with a 1:40.17 (49.62 – 50.55) performance and finished 17th

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

  • Sophomore Caleb Gorton (Goffstown, N.H.) placed fourth with a 1:16.82 (38.34 – 38.48) total time
  • Second-year Aidan Wolfinger (Bedford, N.H.) finished fifth with a 1:17.53 (38.48 – 39.05) effort
  • Sophomore Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.) was 11th (1:23.69, 47.51 – 36.18)
  • Freshman Dimitri Southworth (Biddeford, Maine) posted a DNF on his first run with a 49.51 time on the second

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's is back in action next Saturday with a Giant Slalom event at Sunday River. The races are set to start at 10:00 AM.
