Box Score NASHUA, N.H. – The Saint Joseph's College (5-0, 1-0 GNAC) women's lacrosse team kicked off Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a decisive 20-5 victory at Rivier University (1-3, 0-2 GNAC) on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks opened the contest with four goals from four different players in the opening three minutes and boasted a 10-1 cushion after sophomore Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) netted her second marker of the night as time expired in the first quarter.
St. Joe's went into intermission owning a 15-1 advantage and outscored the Raiders by a 4-0 margin in the third period to claim a 19-1 lead.
Rivier opened the fourth frame with four consecutive goals, but the rally effort proved to be too little, too late as the Monks capped the game scoring with a Heather Rohr (Merrimack, N.H.) strike with 4:21 remaining.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in shots (34-10), shots on goal (27-5), ground balls (23-12) and draw controls (19-8) in the victory.
THE KEEPERS:
Freshman starter Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) picked up the first victory of her collegiate career after facing just one shot in the first half while first-year Jenna Shutt (Holliston, Mass.) posted one save in 30 minutes of relief duty.
For Rivier, Lindsey Kruger turned away seven shots in the losing effort.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Freshman Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) scored four goals on five shots and picked up four draw controls
- Grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tallied two goals, seven assists, four draw controls and a pair of ground balls
- Freshman Brianna Paul (Brattleboro, Vt.) registered three goals with an assist and three ground balls
- Sophomore Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) scored three goals and added an assist
- Mourmouras netted three goals
- Freshman Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) added three goals, three ground balls, and three draw controls
- Sophomore Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists with seven draw controls and a pair of ground balls
LEADERS – RIVIER:
- Sarah Lachance scored two goals with an assist
- Caitlin Newell netted two tallies
- Breana Abilheira-Cargill scooped up three ground balls
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 10-2 all-time versus Rivier University and has defeated the Raiders in nine-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2012 campaign.
