Box Score HENNIKER, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (2-7) defeated New England College (1-7), 13-4, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Thursday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
With the game tied 2-2 early in the second quarter, the Monks rattled off seven unanswered goals – including four from sophomore Timothy Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) – to claim a 9-2 lead with 6:07 left in the third period.
The Pilgrims closed out the third quarter with last-minute goals from Kyle Hamilton (Londonderry, N.H.) and Thomas Doe (Windham, N.H.) to cut their deficit to 9-4 heading into the final frame, but Saint Joseph's closed the door with four-straight tallies to account for the 13-4 final.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (43-28), shots on goal (25-11) and man-up goals (4-1) while New England College maintained the lead in ground balls (32-28) and face-off victories (11-10) on the evening.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior starter Brannon Gilbert (Gray, Maine) turned away seven of the 11 shots he faced to pick up the win while NEC goalie Connor Almstrom (Cumberland, R.I.) made 12 stops in a losing effort.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Goodfellow netted a game-high five goals with an assist and four ground balls
- Junior Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) scored three goals and dealt three assists
- Junior Noah Tierney-Honan (Dracut, Mass.) added two goals and an assist
- Freshman Will Levesque (Marlow, N.H.) tacked on a goal and an assist
- Senior Wyatt LeBlanc (Arundel, Maine) was credited with three assists and freshman Calvin Heline (Amesbury, Mass.) registered a pair of helpers
- Freshman Anthony Samiotes (Hampstead, N.H.) picked up eight ground balls and three caused turnovers
LEADERS – NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE:
- Smith tallied a goal, an assist and two ground balls
- Doe picked up a game-high nine ground balls
- Senior Quint Bartush (Norwalk, Conn.) added four ground balls and was 11-for-21 on face-off attempts
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-1 in the history of the series with New England College. The Pilgrims defeated the Monks in Standish last spring, 17-11.
