Monks Surge Past Cadets in GNAC Opener, 21-7

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Saint Joseph's College women's lacrosse team (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) kicked off Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 21-7 victory at Norwich University (1-2, 0-1 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Both teams scored in the first three minutes of the contest, as sophomore Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) hit pay dirt 33 seconds into play and Maddie Etherton netted the equalizer at the 12:19 mark.

Saint Joseph's went on to score four unanswered tallies, as sophomore Brianna Paul (Brattleboro, Vt.) put the visitors on top – for good, as it played out – at the 10:27 mark, grad Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) netted a pair in a matter of 55 seconds, and junior Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) struck on a free-position attempt to make it a 5-1 game with 3:08 left in the first quarter.

Michaila Furchak put the Cadets back on the board with a goal at the 1:56 mark, but the Monks mounted a 7-0 run that included three goals from junior Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) to build a 12-2 lead with 7:37 before the break.

Ahead by a 13-4 margin heading into the third period, St. Joe's netted six of the game's seven goals and held a 19-5 cushion after Dexter potted her sixth goal of the contest off a Mourmouras dish with 11:22 left in the final frame.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (31-16), shots on goal (24-9), draw controls (18-11), and caused turnovers (17-10) while Norwich posted an 11-5 advantage in ground balls.

THE KEEPERS:

Both teams split time in the cage, as freshman Alexis Eldridge (Effingham, N.H.) made one save in the first half to pick up the victory and sophomore Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) turned away one shot in the second stanza. For the Cadets, Maeve Noble-Lowe suffered the loss after allowing 13 goals while making a pair of saves in the first half and Carlie Henning yielded eight goals with one stop in the second half.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Dexter led all players with six goals and two assists for eight total points while picking up four draw controls
  • Mourmouras added three goals and two assists
  • Clark produced two goals and three assists
  • Junior Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) scored two goals with an assist and 10 draw controls
  • Collins chipped in with three goals and an assist
  • Junior Madison Scott (Cumberland, Maine) notched two ground balls and three caused turnovers

LEADERS – NORWICH:

  • Furchak paced the Cadets with three goals
  • Maddie Etherton added a pair with two draw controls
  • Ellie Moriarty dealt a pair of assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory Saint Joseph's improves to 14-6 all-time versus Norwich University and has now won 13-consecutive games over the Cadets dating back to the 2014 campaign.
