STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College of Maine (1-2, 0-0) built an early 17-point lead in the second half, and despite a late rally by the University of New England (2-1, 0-0), the Monks held on to secure a 73-61 win in Tuesday night's non-conference women's basketball contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's showcased a balanced attack, while the Nor'easters struggled with their shooting in the first half, but they came alive in the third quarter, scoring 25 points and shooting 75 percent (9-of-12) from the field. A basket by Jenisch with just over four minutes left in the third cut the Monks' lead to 38-32, marking the closest UNE had been since early in the second quarter.
Despite UNE's 15-4 run, the defending GNAC champions responded quickly. Ramsdell's three-pointer at the 2:35 mark of the third extended the Saint Joseph's lead back to 12 (45-33). With UNE trailing 51-42 heading into the fourth, Jenisch opened the quarter with a three-pointer to trim the deficit to six. However, Saint Joseph's quickly answered with three consecutive baskets, including a three-pointer from Hurley, to push the lead back to double digits and secure the win.
