Monks Rally Past Griffins, 12-9

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Saint Joseph's College (4-2) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to defeat Gwynedd Mercy University (0-6), 12-9, in a non-conference men's lacrosse contest on Monday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Griffins opened the game with four consecutive goals and went into the second stanza with the 4-0 lead. The Monks finally hit pay dirt early in the frame with a pair of goals in a matter of 12 seconds, as senior Tim Goodfellow (Wayland, Mass.) struck at the 12:31 mark and freshman Zander Kirk (Bath, Maine) won the ensuing face off and raced to the net to score his first collegiate goal.

The teams basically swapped scores for the rest of the first half as Gwynedd Mercy headed into intermission with a 7-5 advantage.

The hosts grabbed an 8-5 lead when Nick Citrigno scored with 10:40 left in the third period, but the Monks went on to net seven of the game's final eight goals - including six straight - to secure the comeback victory.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (43-28), shots on goal (19-17), ground balls (36-30), caused turnovers (9-7), and face-offs (17-7) in the triumph.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks split time in goal, as junior starter Liam Greene (Mansfield, Mass.) made five saves in the first half and freshman Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) turned away three shots in the second half to pick up the win.

Gwynedd Mercy netminder Jared Devine made seven saves in the losing effort.

  • Goodfellow scored three goals with two assists and a pair of ground balls
  • Grad Xavier Michaud (Wales, Maine) added three goals on eight shots
  • Junior Tyler Moscato (West Haven, Conn.) netted a pair of goals
  • Grad Nathanial Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) scored twice with two ground balls
  • Sophomore Matt Denman (Brentwood, N.H.) chipped in with three assists and nine ground balls
  • Kirk won 9-of-12 face-off attempts with three ground balls
  • Senior Ian Barker (Norton, Mass.) was 8-for-11 on face-off bids
  • Sophomore Nick Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) picked up six ground balls

  • Richie Hughes scored three goals on five shots
  • Nick Flamma tallied two goals and an assist with two ground balls
  • Ian Kish netted a goal with two assists and four ground balls
