Monks Cruise Past AMCATS, 19-1

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (7-3, 3-1 GNAC) toppled Anna Maria College (2-7, 1-5 GNAC), 19-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks scored five goals - including two apiece from Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) and Dinah Wadleigh (Augusta, Maine) - in the first nine minutes before the AMCATS got on the board with an Ivy Ballou (Douglas, Mass.) tally at the 3:23 mark of the opening frame.

As it played out, Saint Joseph's managed to hold the Anna Maria attackers scoreless for the remainder of the afternoon as the hosts proceeded to enforce running clock time with six unanswered goals. The Monks carried a 12-1 advantage into intermission after sophomore Sophia Burton (Westtown, N.Y.) netted a man-up marker with 4:21 before the break.

St. Joe's closed out the offensive barrage with seven straight markers in the third and fourth quarters combined, as sophomore Elle Hall (Casco, Maine) and freshman Mia Kearns (Kingston, Mass.) capped the scoring ledger with their first collegiate goals in the closing three minutes.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (46-8), shots on goal (34-4), ground balls (38-24), draw controls (14-9), and caused turnovers (24-11).

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's deployed all three of their netminders, as sophomore Alexis Eldridge (Effingham, N.H.) logged the first 15 minutes and allowed the lone AMCAT goal, junior Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) was untested during the second stanza, and freshman Julia Price (Newbury, Mass.) turned away three shots in the second half.

For Anna Maria, grad keeper Gabi Gibson (Anchorage, Alaska) made 15 saves with eight ground balls in a complete game effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) set new career-highs with six goals and nine ground balls and added an assist, three draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Senior Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) added three goals and a pair of ground balls
  • Junior Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) tacked on two goals and an assist
  • Wadleigh and Burton contributed two goals apiece
  • Sophomore Celia Melanson (Waterford, Maine) chipped in with a goal and two assists
  • Senior Heather Rohr (Merrimack, N.H.) picked up five ground balls, four draw controls, and four caused turnovers
  • Senior Madison Scott (Cumberland, Maine) added four ground balls and four caused turnovers

LEADERS – ANNA MARIA:

  • Ballou scored the AMCATS' only goal with junior Carly Drew (Rochester, Mass.) assisting on the play
  • Freshman Kortney Clark (Schenectady, N.Y.) posted three ground balls and four caused turnovers

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-0 all-time versus Anna Maria College.
