STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College Athletics and Academic Faculty and Staff recognized 21 fall sport student-athletes for their commitment to academics, athletics, and leadership with a STudent-Athlete Recognition (STAR) ceremony in the Hall of Fame Room on Wednesday, December 3.
The STAR program honors student-athletes who have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average while demonstrating a strong commitment to academics, athletics, and leadership on campus. Faculty members from each academic department were polled and asked to nominate up to two eligible student-athletes—often by major or track, depending on the structure of the department—for this distinction.
"As the Faculty Athletics Representative, I speak on behalf of both academics and athletics when I say we are extremely proud of our student-athletes' hard work and dedication to your studies while balancing the demands of being a fall sport athlete," said Faculty Athletics Representative Dr. Tara Whiton during the ceremony. "We are all excited to celebrate each of you and continue supporting your journey here at SJC."
The ceremony also emphasized the importance of community and support systems in student-athlete success. Honorees were encouraged to reflect on and thank the teammates, coaches, faculty, staff, family members, and mentors who played a role in their journeys this semester.
"These achievements are not just your own, but a reflection of the collective effort of your teams and the broader Saint Joseph's community," Dr. Whiton added. "Every practice, game, assignment, and moment of effort has contributed to your growth and success this semester. We hope you'll continue to carry the same sportsmanship and competitive spirit into your academics and all other areas of your lives."
Certificates were presented to each STAR honoree in recognition of their accomplishments and their exemplary representation of Saint Joseph's College both on the field and in the classroom.
These student-athletes exemplify the college's core values on and off the field:
