STANDISH, Maine – In today's season opener the Saint Joseph's College Monks kicked off their 2025 season with a 16-10 win over Husson (0-1), giving new head coach Dexter a victory in her debut leading the Monks on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Celia Melanson led the charge for Saint Joseph's, scoring four goals and dishing out four assists to fuel the offense. Mackenzie Siebert and Ella Highbarger each netted three goals, while Taylor Dumond and Shauna Clark added two goals apiece to complete the scoring.
Husson came out strong early, taking a 4-3 lead in the first quarter, thanks to the efforts of Averi Baker and Kate Boehmcke, both of whom finished with four goals. However, Saint Joseph's responded with a dominant second quarter, outscoring the Eagles 4-2 to take a 7-6 lead into halftime.
The Monks pulled away in the second half, outscoring Husson 9-4 over the final two quarters to seal the win. Saint Joseph's controlled the game statistically, outshooting Husson 36-23 and dominating in ground balls (33-18) and saves (8-5).
Though the Monks committed more fouls (22-15), they managed to maintain possession with strong ball control, winning 12 draw controls to Husson's 8. Saint Joseph's defense effectively limited Husson's chances, holding them to no shots on goal in the game.
For Husson, Laela Martinez and Natalie Whitten each scored a goal, while Sophia Burton and Dinah Wadleigh each added a goal for Saint Joseph's.
With the win, Coach Dexter starts her tenure with a victory, and the Monks begin the 2025 season on a high note. Meanwhile, Husson will look to bounce back in their next game as they seek their first win of the season.
THE KEEPERS:
The Monks utilized two netminders in today's triumph, as senior Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) made seven saves in 49 minutes and sophomore Julia Price (Newbury, Mass.) made one stop in ten minutes between the pipes.
Husson netminder Emma Beegz made 16 saves in a complete-game effort.
