Monks Fall to Blue Jays in GNAC Championship, 66-59

STANDISH, Maine – University of Saint Joseph (19-9) edged past Saint Joseph's College (21-7), 66-59, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball Championship at Saint Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon.

For the Monks, the loss signals the end of the 2024-25 campaign as well as the team's seven game winning streak and the college basketball careers of Mackenzie Currie and Angelica Hurley.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Blue Jays came out strong, jumping to an early 8-4 lead which prompted a timeout from SJC at the 5:59 mark of the first quarter. The Monks responded with a 7-2 run to take a 13-12 lead with 2:01 left in the quarter with baskets from Grace Ramsdell, Angelica Hurley, Madison Lebel, and Logan Brown . USJ quickly regained the lead with a 7-2 run of their own, finishing the quarter with a 19-15 advantage.

The Blue Jays carried that momentum into the second quarter, as USJ drained a three-pointer to extend the lead to 24-17 at the 8:52 mark. SJC managed to trim the deficit to four at 26-22 with baskets from Elisabeth Stapelfeld and Label. USJ answered with a 5-0 run pushing the lead to 31-22, prompting another Monks timeout with 5:08 left in the half. The two teams traded points down the stretch, and the Blue Jays went into the break with a 37-29 lead.

SJC opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 37-35, forcing a USJ timeout at 8:12. The Blue Jays responded with an 8-2 stretch to push the lead back to eight at 45-37, which led to a Monks timeout at 5:16. USJ continued to extend its lead, going up by 11 points after Ouellette's layup at the 4:05 mark, but SJC fought back and trimmed the deficit to three by the end of the quarter, with USJ leading 52-47.

The Monks kept chipping away in the fourth, cutting the margin to one at 52-51, with points from Ramsdell and Stapelfeld, prompting a USJ timeout at 8:12. USJ responded with a 6-0 run to stretch the lead to seven at 60-53, forcing another SJC timeout at 4:08. Both teams clamped down defensively, and the Blue Jays held onto their lead at 60-55, calling a timeout at 2:12. USJ then sealed the win at the free-throw line, securing a 66-59 victory.
