Monks Rally Past Fighting Scots for Narrow 7-6 Victory

STANDISH, Maine – In a back-and-forth battle, Saint Joseph's College (3-3, 1-0) pulled out a gritty 7-6 win over Gordon College (1-3, 0-0) in non-conference men's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday afternoon.

How It Happened:

The Monks came out strong, with senior Calvin Heline (Amesbury, MA) and Declan Covell (Merrimack, NH) both finding the net to help SJC take a 3-2 lead after the opening quarter.

Gordon responded in the second; with two goals in the final minute the Fighting Scots took a 5-4 advantage into halftime. Tiger Hopkins (Leeds, ME) kept the Monks within striking distance, scoring earlier in the period.

Saint Joseph's took control in the third, with Heline and Tyler Moscato (West Haven, CT) scoring in the final minute to reclaim a 6-5 lead.

The fourth quarter was tense, as Gordon tied things up at 6-6 with 8:44 to play. But with under five minutes remaining, Ryan Bogdanski (Southington, CT) delivered the game-winner, lifting the Monks to victory.

Leaders-Saint Joseph's:

  • Calvin Heline led the way with a hat trick on eight shots
  • Tiger Hopkins registered a goal on a game-high 13 shots, adding three ground balls
  • Tyler Moscato chipped in with a goal, an assist, and three ground balls
  • Ryan Bogdanski netted the game-winner
  • Zander Kirk (Bath, ME) won eight face-offs and grabbed two ground balls
  • Kevin Wood (Danvers, MA) led the defense with three caused turnovers

Leaders-Gordon:

  • Nicolas Flemmi paced the Scots with three goals on seven shots.
  • Jackson Wright added two goals and forced a turnover.
  • Ryan Arthur notched one goal on five shots.
  • Aidan Walsh was a force at the X, winning 9-of-17 face-offs and scooping up six ground balls.
  • Walsh and Cullen Davey anchored the defense with multiple caused turnovers.

In the Crease:

SJC goalie Reed Wescott stood tall with 11 saves in the win, while Gordon's Colin Liscomb kept his team in it with 21 stops.
