WATERVILLE, ME- Saint Joseph's and Thomas College each claimed a win in Saturday's doubleheader. The Terriers took the opener 5-1 with strong pitching and timely hitting, while the Monks bounced back in a big way, rolling to a 9-0 five inning victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Thomas 5, Saint Joseph's 1
Saint Joseph's struck first as
Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) launched a solo homer to left in the opening inning, but that was the only offense the Monks could generate against Megan Oberholze, who kept them in check with a complete-game effort. The Thomas ace allowed just five hits while striking out four.
The Terriers took the lead in the fourth and eventually scored on an RBI single followed by a sacrifice fly to make it 2-1. They added another in the fifth on an error and sealed the win with two more in the sixth, with RBI singles.
Despite five hits, Saint Joseph's couldn't capitalize after Foley's early blast.
Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) (0-3) took the loss, giving up five earned runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 9, Thomas 0 (5 innings)
The Monks flipped the script in the second game, erupting for seven runs in the fourth inning and cruising to a 9-0 mercy-rule win.
After
Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) put Saint Joseph's on the board with an RBI double in the second, the offense exploded in the fourth.
Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) delivered the big blow, clearing the bases with a three-run triple, while
Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME) and Carpenter each chipped in RBI hits to break the game open.
Rylee Page (Somersworth, NH) (1-0) dominated in the circle, holding Thomas scoreless over four innings while scattering five hits.
Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, ME) closed it out with a clean fifth.
Thomas starter Addy Boyce (3-3) struggled, surrendering eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in four innings, as the Terriers' defense faltered with four errors.
