FRANKLIN, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (Maine) secured a 10-7 victory over Dean College on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Monks improve to 8-5 on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 3-10.
Saint Joseph's struck first in the opening frame when Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH) drove in Luke Doughty (York, ME) with an RBI single. The Monks extended their advantage in the third, plating four runs on four hits to build a 5-0 lead. Dawson Gundlah (York, ME), Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH), and Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, MA) each contributed RBIs during the surge.
Dean responded in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit to 5-2 on a two-run double. The Monks added another run in the fourth on Gundlah's second RBI of the day, but the Bulldogs clawed their way back in the fifth, scoring three times to tie the game at 6-6. During the rally Dean saw RBIs from three different players.
Locked in a 6-6 deadlock, Saint Joseph's broke through in the top of the eighth, pushing across four runs to reclaim control. N. Frink's triple highlighted the inning, while Gundlah capped his impressive day with his third RBI. Dean added a run in the ninth on a defensive miscue, but J. Dyer closed the door to secure his second save of the season.
Gundlah led the Monks' offense with a stellar 4-for-5 performance, driving in three runs. Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, MA) crossed the plate three times, while Belvin chipped in with two hits and an RBI.
Hugh Barett (Durham, CT) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, while Owen Critchley suffered the loss for Dean. Defensive struggles plagued the Bulldogs, who committed seven errors, while the Monks capitalized despite recording three miscues of their own.
