Saint Joseph's 7, Penn State Brandywine 5
Saint Joseph's (Maine) started the season on a high note, holding off a late rally to take down Penn State Brandywine 7-5 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Chain Lakes.
The Monks got on the board in the second inning when Luke Doughty roped a double to bring home Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, MA). They broke things open in the fourth, plating five runs behind a two-run single from Michael Wearne (Ellington, CT) and RBI hits from Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) and Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, MA).
Brandywine chipped away in the fifth, scoring twice on RBI singles to make it a 6-2 game. Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) added a key insurance run for the Monks in the sixth with a solo homer, stretching the lead to 7-2.
The Lions made things interesting in the seventh, scoring three runs on two RBI hits plus an RBI hit-by-pitch. With the tying run at the plate, Jack Dyer (Medford, MA) came out of the bullpen and slammed the door, locking up the save.
Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) earned the win, tossing five innings and allowing two runs while striking out seven. Nugent took the loss for Brandywine, surrendering six runs over three innings. Luke Doughty (York, ME) paced the Monks with two hits, including an RBI double.

Pitching stole the show in Game 2, as Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, NH) delivered a dominant performance to lead the Monks to a 2-1 win and a doubleheader sweep.
After three scoreless innings, Saint Joseph's broke through in the fourth when Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT), who was hit by a pitch, came around to score on Nic Frink's RBI double. The Monks added another in the fifth as Wilhelm drove in Ryan Thurber (South Portland, ME) with a single to make it 2-0.
Padraig Mac Seain kept Brandywine's offense in check, holding them to just one hit through six innings. The Lions made some noise in the seventh when a solo homer to cut the deficit to one, but Padraig Mac Seain stayed composed and retired the next two batters to seal the complete-game win.
Padraig Mac Seain was nearly untouchable, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out seven. Serenelli pitched well for Brandywine, giving up two runs on five hits over six innings but took the loss.
Nic Frink led the Monks with two hits, including an RBI double.
With the sweep, Saint Joseph's starts the season 2-0, while Penn State Brandywine drops to 2-8. The Monks will look to keep their momentum going as they continue their early-season slate on Monday against Wisconsin-Superior (DH).
