Eighth-Inning Surge Propels Monks Over Elms

STANDISH, Maine-The Saint Joseph's Monks baseball team provided some late-inning magic on Thursday afternoon, erupting with four runs in the eighth inning to come from behind and beat Elms College (9-15, 4-5), 6–4, at Larry Mahaney Diamond. The victory lifts Saint Joseph's to 11–12 overall and 4-6 in the GNAC.

Elms jumped out early, scoring three in the second inning thanks to a bases-clearing triple from Cameron Watkins. They tacked on another run in the fourth during a triple play that still allowed a runner to cross the plate.

Saint Joseph's chipped away with single runs in the first and third. Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT) got things going with a triple and scored on Vinny O'Leary's (North Quincy, MA) groundout. Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH) later singled and came home on O'Leary's second RBI of the game.

Still down 4–2 heading into the eighth, the Monks made their move. Two errors helped Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) and Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, MA) score the tying runs. Then, pinch-runner Connor Finn (Kingston, MA) crossed the plate on Kastle's double to give Saint Joseph's the lead. Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH), who drew a walk off the bench, added an insurance run when he scored on Wilhelm's lineout.

Wilhelm led the Monks with a 3-for-5 performance, including a triple. Kastle also had three hits, an RBI, and a double. In total, Saint Joseph's tallied 10 hits and played clean defense. Reliever William Dionne (Somerset, MA) shut the door in style, striking out five over two perfect innings to earn his third win of the season.

For Elms, Andrew Ciaglo went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Camron Watkins drove in three with his big second-inning triple.
