Brander Tosses Shutout as Monks Blank Anna Maria, 5-0

STANDISH, ME- Saint Joseph's College of Maine (12-12, 5-6) cruised to a 5-0 win over Anna Maria College on Monday afternoon at home. With the victory, the Monks improve to .500 on the season, while the AMCATS fall to 13-14 (2-7 GNAC).

Senior right-hander Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) was lights out, throwing a complete-game shutout. Brander was in total control from start to finish, scattering seven hits over nine innings, striking out nine, and not issuing a single walk. He was incredibly efficient too, needing just 90 pitches to go the distance.

Saint Joe's set the tone early with a three-run first inning. After Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH) drew a leadoff walk and eventually came around to score on a passed ball, Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) ripped a double to right to bring home Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT). Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) followed that up with a single to center to score Frink, giving the Monks a quick 3-0 lead.

The offense added to the cushion in the sixth when Luke Doughty (York, ME) drove in Nick Villano (Peabidy, MA) with a single to center. One inning later, Wilhelm came home on a defensive miscue to make it 5-0.

Frink led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run. Carlisle added two hits and an RBI, while Wilhelm crossed the plate twice.

Anna Maria managed seven hits but couldn't generate much offense against Brander, who worked around traffic all game. The AMCATS threatened in the ninth, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Brander shut the door with a fielder's choice and a groundout to seal the win.

Nick Choate took the loss for Anna Maria, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings, though he struck out ten.
