STANDISH, Maine — Saint Joseph's College jumped out to an early lead Friday afternoon, but couldn't hold off a surging Wentworth squad, falling 10-5 in a non-conference matchup at home.
The Monks got off to a hot start, going up 5-1 after two innings thanks in large part to Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH), who had a big day at the plate. Carlisle went 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, and drove in four runs, including a two-run shot in the first and a two-run double in the second.
In the fourth inning the Leopards broke things open with an eight-run outburst on eight hits, grabbing a 9-5. The rally featured a solo homer and a key two-run double.
Saint Joe's starter Jason Johnson (Thomaston, CT) went 3.1 innings before handing the ball to Ryan Thurber (South Portland, ME). Overall, the Monks' pitching staff had a tough time keeping Wentworth's bats quiet, as the Leopards finished with 12 hits.
On the other side, Nick Tiani picked up the win in relief, leading a Leopards bullpen that shut down the Monks over the final seven innings. Wentworth's relievers struck out 10 Saint Joseph's hitters during that stretch.
The Monks matched Wentworth with 12 hits of their own. Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) went 2-for-4, and Michael Wearne (Ellington, CT) added an RBI single.
With the loss, the Monks drop to 13-15 on the season.
