Game Recap: Baseball |

Monks Take Two from UMaine-Farmington

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College baseball team came out strong on Saturday, picking up a doubleheader sweep over UMaine-Farmington with 8-4 and 5-1 wins at home. With the wins, the Monks improve to 15-15 (5-7 GNAC) and the Beavers (5-18, 1-7).

Before the first pitch, the Monks honored their seniors- Michael Wearne (Ellington, CT), Logan Dee (Laconia, NH), Dawson Gundlah (York, ME), Hugh Barrett (Durham, CT), Jason Johnson (Thomaston, CT), Michael Vittozzi (North Reading, MA), Kyle MacKay (Dracut, MA), Alex Moore (Henniker, NH), and Zack Adams (Norton, MA) for their dedication and impact on the program over the past four years.

In Game 1, the Monks wasted no time getting on the board. A two-run blast by Dylan Brander (Merrimack, NH) in the second inning, following a Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) double, set the tone early. Dawson Gundlah (York, ME) added another run that inning to make it 3-0.

The Monks kept rolling in the third—Ryan Kastle (Concord, NH) launched a solo shot, and Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, NH) came home on a Gundlah RBI single, stretching the lead to 5-0. In the fifth, Brander doubled and scored on a triple from Gundlah, who then came in on an Alex Moore sac fly to make it 7-0.

The Beavers showed some fight in the sixth, cutting into the lead with a grand slam. But the Monks answered right back—Gundlah was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Carlisle for an insurance run.

Kyle MacKay picked up the win with five dominant innings of one-hit ball, and Carlisle closed the door with 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the save.

In the second game, UMaine-Farmington struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Saint Joseph's took over from there. Michael Richards (Melrose, MA) doubled in the third and later scored on a Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT) RBI single. Kastle also came across on a sacrifice fly from Frink, giving the Monks a 2-1 lead.

They added some cushion in the fifth. Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH) walked and scored on Brindle's RBI single, Nick Villano (Peabody, MA) came home on Carlisle's sac fly, and Michael Wearne crossed the plate on an infield RBI from Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, MA).

Zack Adams earned his first win of the year, settling in after the early run, and the Monks' bullpen was lights out. Alex Moore (Henniker, NH), Andrew Keniston (Center Ossipee, NH), and Jack Dyer (Medford, MA) combined for five shutout innings, with Keniston locking down the save.
