Huskies Edge Monks 9-8

GORHAM, Maine — At Ed Flaherty Field on Monday afternoon, Southern Maine (12-17, 6-5) clawed its way back from a six-run hole to knock off Saint Joseph's (15-16, 5-7) in a 9-8 non-conference win.

The Monks were in control early, jumping out to a 7-1 lead through five innings. They used a five-run fifth — highlighted by a two-run double from Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, CT) — to break things open. Wilhelm had a strong day at the plate, finishing with two RBIs and two runs scored. Nic Frink (Scarborough, ME) also chipped in with a solo homer in the sixth to stretch the lead to 8-4.

Southern Maine began chipping away with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, then exploded for four more in the sixth to even things up at 8-all. The tying run came  on a bases-loaded walk.

The go-ahead run came in the eighth, when USM ripped an RBI double down the left field line to score one run. That 9-8 lead held for USM to secure the win.

Saint Joseph's finished with seven hits, getting two apiece from Ethan Belvin (Claremont, NH) and Dawson Gundlah (York, ME). Jack Dyer (Medord, MA) took the loss in relief for the Monks, who used eight pitchers in total.
