STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College men's basketball junior guard Remijo Wani (Portland, Maine) became the 48th member of the Monks' 1,000-Point Club during a 107-67 GNAC victory at New England College on Wednesday, January 14.
Wani began the night needing 27 points and reached the 1,000-point mark on a deep three-pointer with 5:06 remaining. Sophomore Mikaele Martinez (Valhalla, N.Y.) was credited with the assist, and Wani finished with 28 points, five rebounds, and three assists while shooting 7-for-13 from beyond the arc in the victory.
Wani's milestone performance ranks among the program's most notable of the modern era. He tied Elbie Murphy '09 for the second-most points needed to reach 1,000 in the game he got there (27), trailing only Nicholas Jobin '14, who entered 29 points shy and scored 31 to hit the mark against Lasell on January 23, 2014. Wani's 28 points also stand as the fifth-most scored by an SJC player in a 1,000-point milestone game (since 2000).
Wani heads into Saturday's non-conference matchup with Bates College with 1,055 career points in 67 games. He is the 15th player in program history to reach the milestone as a junior and joins current teammate John Paul Frazier (York, Maine), who accomplished the feat last winter.
Wani wasn't the only Monk to hit the 1,000-point mark against the Pilgrims. Senior forward Wani Donato (Portland, Maine) started the game six points shy and reached the plateau when he converted a layup 9:31 into the contest. It marked the second time in program history that two Saint Joseph's players scored their 1,000th point in the same game. Hall of Fame inductees David Chadbourne '87 and Bryan Rubenskas '87 were the first duo to do so, accomplishing the feat in a 110-80 win in the "Chamber of Horrors" on January 20, 1987.
Through 67 career games, Wani is averaging 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 46.4% (403-869) from the field, 33.9% (126-372) from three-point range, and 78.3% (123-157) at the free-throw line. He has totaled 391 rebounds, 172 assists, 92 steals, and 22 blocks, and ranks 10th in program history in scoring average and 15th in three-pointers made.
Wani is the sixth player to reach the 1,000-point mark during head coach Tyler Ackley's five-year tenure, joining Nick Curtis '22, Griffin Foley '22, Julian Llopiz '25, John Paul Frazier, and Wani Donato among those to enter the club since the start of the 2021-22 season.
