NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (4-2-5, 3-0-4 GNAC) defeated Lasell University (0-8-3, 0-4-3 GNAC), 4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Taylor Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks applied pressure immediately, putting three shots on target in the opening three minutes before junior Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) opened the scoring at 8:16. Junior Godin Ndayishimiye (Bujumbura, Burundi) was credited with an assist on the tally.
Saint Joseph's added two goals just over four minutes apart late in the first half. Senior Zander Haskell (Scarborough, Maine) scored an unassisted goal at 32:26, and senior Diego Robinson (Hinesburg, Vt.) extended the lead to 3-0 at 36:33 off a corner kick from senior Nate Needle (Scarborough, Maine).
The Monks finished the opening half with a 21-5 advantage in shots and eight corner kicks while senior goalkeeper Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) made two saves.
Marion netted his second goal at 53:35, moments after a Haskell attempt was saved, to complete the scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper Connor Messervey (Hermon, Maine) helped preserve the shutout by stopping a penalty kick at 65:46 and adding another save at 84:08.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (37-12), shots on goal (23-6) and corner kicks (10-2) in the conference contest.
THE KEEPERS:
Bachmann recorded four saves in 61:45, while Messervey made two stops over the final 28:15 to complete the combined shutout. Lasell goalkeeper Reed Brown registered 19 saves in 90 minutes.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improved to 12-10 all-time against Lasell University and extended its winning streak in the series to 10 games. The Monks have shut out the Lasers in eight of those victories dating back to 2016.
