STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-1, 2-0 GNAC) continued its offensive surge with a commanding 28-1 victory over Mitchell College (0-1) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
BROKEN RECORD:
SJC sophomore Cody Southwick (Saco, Maine) won 31-of-32 face-off attempts in the victory and surpassed the Monks' single-game face-off wins record, previously held by junior Zander Kirk (West Bath, Maine), who recorded 24 wins against Elms College on February 28, 2026.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's took control early, erupting for 12 goals in the opening quarter to build a commanding advantage. Junior Joseph Kiedaisch (Westminster, Mass.) and freshman Aidan Byrne (West Newbury, Mass.) sparked the run with tallies within the first minute. Goals from graduate student Jack Leach (Pembroke, Mass.), junior Brandon Cavicchi (Kingston, Mass.), sophomore Maxwell Plunske (South Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Noah Schaeffer (Gray, Maine), junior Nicolas Michaud (Wales, Maine), and senior David Cook (Upton, Mass.) capped off a dominating first quarter.
The Monks continued to pour it on in the second quarter, adding eight more goals to extend the lead to 20-0 at halftime. Cavicchi continued his strong afternoon with three more tallies while sophomore Andre Pelletier (Winthrop, Maine) and sophomore Caleb Reardon (Belchertown, Mass.) added themselves to the scoresheet.
Saint Joseph's pushed the lead to 24-0 early in the third quarter behind a pair of goals from both Michaud and Schaeffer before Mitchell broke through with its lone goal of the contest when freshman Graham Brown (Southlake, Texas) scored midway through the period. The Monks responded with another Plunske goal to carry a 25-1 advantage into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, Saint Joseph's added three more goals as sophomore Alec Henry (Hampstead, N.H.), Pelletier, and Reardon all found the back of the net to seal the 28-1 victory.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Saint Joseph's controlled play from start to finish, holding advantages in shots (55-5), shots on goal (41-4), ground balls (57-4), and face-offs (31-1). The Monks also cleared efficiently, converting 19 of 22 attempts as well as going 1-for-1 on extra-man opportunities.
THE KEEPERS:
The Monks split the net, with junior Reed Wescott (Windham, Maine) taking the victory (one save in the first half). Freshman Sean Cushing (Nobleboro, Maine) recorded two saves and allowed one goal in the second half.
Mitchell junior goalkeeper Cameron Haefs (Chicago, Ill.) finished with 13 saves in the loss.
