Box Score STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (2-2), buoyed by a 7-9 performance
from beyond the arc in the first half, defeated Gordon College
(2-2), 72-42, in non-conference women's basketball action at the
Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. Four Monks reached
double-digit point totals, with Carolyn
Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) and
Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland,
ME) both notching a game-high 15 points in the lopsided victory.
Allie Parent (Camden, ME), a
sophomore transfer from Rivier College, posted her best effort yet
at St. Joe's, with 11 points, 9 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals.
Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME)
recorded her second double-double effort of the young season with
10 points and 12 caroms and also batted away three Gordon shots in
the triumph.
Rebecca Carroll '10 (Pleasant Valley, NY) led the Fighting Scots
with 11 points and added 6 rebounds and Kayla Pacheco '13 (Sutton,
MA) netted 9 points and 6 boards in a losing effort. Emily
Armstrong '13 (Swansea, MA) added a team-high 8 caroms.
St. Joe's jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the first five minutes,
as Parent knocked down a trey and
McDevitt, who was 3-4 from beyond the arc in the
first half, drained a pair from downtown to set the tone early for
the Monks. Freshman guard Danyelle
Shufelt (Sutton, VT) joined in the action with two
three-pointers in the opening stanza as the hosts held a decided
40-20 lead heading into intermission.
Although the lights-out shooting from three-point distance
failed to continue in the second half - St. Joe's shot just 1-7 in
the closing period, the Monks maintained the lofty cushion for the
duration and capped the game with their highest lead of the night.
Shufelt netted 8 points and
Casey Drake '11 (Lebanon, NH)
added 6 points and 5 dimes for the Monks. McDevitt
played a complete game, with 6 caroms and 4 assists aside from her
15 points in the win.
St. Joe's will host University of Southern Maine on Sunday at
5:30, while Gordon is set to play at Framingham State on Tuesday at
6:00 PM.
Noteworthy: The victory for Head Coach
Mike McDevitt '83 was the 350th of his
career and 328th as the Saint Joseph's clipboard
carrier...St. Joe's now owns a 14-3 record against Gordon
College...the margin of victory over the Fighting Scots is the
largest since the Monks defeated College of Saint Joseph (VT),
95-40, on December 5th, 2008...Freeman
is now 86 points away from the 1,000-point mark and, after her
defensive board with 3:58 remaining in the first half, is the
15th player in program history to collect 500 rebounds
in their career.
