Monks Throttle Scots, 73-28

Box Score

WENHAM, MA – Saint Joseph's (2-2) trounced Gordon College (1-3), 73-28, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night. Freshman forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, ME) scored a game-high 15 points and added six boards in the SJC victory.

The Monks maintained a lead for all but 20 seconds in the early going, as the Scots led 3-2 after their second possession of the game. St. Joe's proceeded to rattle off a monumental 34-6 run over a 15 minute span, during which Gordon shot just 1-10 from the field and committed 11 turnovers, to take control of the contest.

Amelia Lamb '12 (Topsham, ME) closed out the offensive outburst with a bucket to put her team ahead, 36-9, with 4:25 left in the first half. Saint Joseph's carried a 42-15 lead into intermission.

In the opening stanza, St. Joe's shot 51.5% (17-33) from the field, 57.1% (4-7) from beyond the arc, and 57.1% (4-7) from the FT line. Gordon countered with a 29.4% (5-17) effort from the floor and a 55.6% (5-9) performance from the charity stripe. The Scots were 0-4 from downtown in the first half.

Young scored 13 of her 15 points and Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) netted 10 for the Monks in the opening 20 minutes.

Saint Joseph's pushed the lead to 20 points when Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, VT) hit a three with 14:19 left and attained a 40-point advantage when Geel converted a pair of freebies at the 6:35 mark.

For the Monks, the 45-point margin of victory is the largest since the Royal Blue defeated College of St. Joseph (VT) by 55 on December 5th, 2008. The win over Gordon improves the Monks' all-time record against the Scots to 15-3.
