Box Score STANDISH, Maine – Bates College (6-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (4-5), 68-58, in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Harold Alfond Center on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The score was tight for the better part of the first half as Bates held a 17-15 edge at the 6:58 mark, but the Bobcats managed to outscore the Monks by a 21-10 margin – with the help of 5-7 three-point shooting effort - over the following six minutes and led by 13 (38-25) heading into intermission.
Saint Joseph's cut the deficit down to 44-38 after sophomore Jae Johns (Long Island, N.Y.) made back-to-back layups, the latter coming at the 13:51 mark, but Bates rattled off a 22-8 offensive outburst over the next nine minutes of play to all but put the game out of reach.
The Monks scored the last 12 points of the contest, including a buzzer-beater made from half-court by sophomore Ben Malloy (Standish, Maine), to account for the 68-58 final.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior forward Quinn Richardson-Newton (Saco, Maine) led all players with a double-double output of 18 points and 10 rebounds
- Sophomore guard Darian Berry (Rochester, N.H.) scored 11 points with eight boards and two assists
- Freshman guard Mario Nery (Bronx, N.Y.) added seven points and six assists
LEADERS – BATES:
- Senior forward Marcus Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots
- Senior forward Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) netted 11 points with seven boards and four assists
- Senior guard Quin Leary (Auburn, Maine) chipped in with 11 points and four caroms
- Freshman guard Nick Gilpin (Hampden, Maine) added nine points, six rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals
NOTEWORTHY:
Bates shot 57.1% (8-14) from beyond the arc with five different players netting at least one three-pointer in the first half…the Bobcats, who entered the game shooting 32.6% from long distance, set a season-high with 12 three-pointers made and posted their second-highest 3FG% (44.4%) of the season in today's contest…Richardson-Newton's double-double is the first by an SJC player this winter...freshman forward Jack Krzeminski (Pelham, N.H.) made his collegiate debut with two points and a pair of rebounds in one minute on the court…the Monks were just 1-10 from three-point range in the second stanza – Malloy's half-court shot was the hosts' lone three-pointer made in the closing 20 minutes.
