Lancers Down Monks, 87-81

STANDISH, Maine – Worcester State University (7-4) outlasted Saint Joseph's College (7-6), 87-81, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In a game featuring eight tie scores and eight lead changes, the Lancers did not secure the advantage for good until late in the fourth quarter, when the visitors broke free from a 74-74 stalemate with a traditional three-point play converted by Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) with 3:15 remaining.

The Monks maintained a two-possession deficit until the closing seconds when Worcester State made five of six free throw attempts to clinch the victory.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Lancers made 21 of 30 attempts from the charity stripe and held considerable leads in points off turnovers (27-16), second chance points (28-6), and points in the paint (46-24) on the evening…Both teams made over half of their shots from the field, as the Lancers shot 52.5% (32-61) and the Monks posted a 50.8% (31-61) effort from the floor.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) netted 21 points with three assists and was 8-for-12 from the floor
  • Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 16 points, three assists, and a pair of rebounds
  • Sophomore guards Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) and Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) came off the bench to score 11 points apiece
  • Freshman guard Bri Jordan (Gray, Maine) chipped in with eight points, three boards, and three assists
  • Senior forward Lexi L'Heureux-Carland (Bridgton, Maine) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass

LEADERS – WORCESTER STATE:

  • LeMay led all players with 26 points and pulled down eight rebounds with four steals and was 11-for-14 from the field over 23 minutes off the bench
  • Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) added 17 points, four rebounds, five assists, five steals, and a pair of blocked shots and was 9-for-12 from the FT line
  • Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) contributed 12 points and four rebounds
  • Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) tallied eight points, eight rebounds, and six assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 0-2 all-time versus Worcester State University. These two teams last met during the 2003-04 season, when the Lancers bested the Monks by a 58-57 score.
