Saint Joseph's Cruises Past UMaine-Augusta, 77-32

STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) led three Saint Joseph's College (1-0) players in double digits to help the Monks topple UMaine-Augusta (0-3), 77-32, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Playing in their first game in over a year, the Monks showed little rust in building an insurmountable lead as a 26-0 run spanning eight minutes saw the hosts claim a 35-4 advantage with 7:12 on the second-quarter clock.

St. Joe's headed into intermission with a 49-9 cushion after shooting 62.1% (18-29) from the field – including a 7-for-10 clip from three-point range – in the first two periods. Conversely, UMaine-Augusta went 1-for-16 from the floor with 16 turnovers in the first and second quarters combined.

The Monks led 65-18 through three quarters and held a game-high 50-point advantage after junior Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) hit a three-pointer with 6:28 remaining in the fourth frame.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's shot an even 50% (28-56) from the floor, including a 41.7% (10-24) rate from beyond the arc, in the victory while UMaine-Augusta shot 20.5% (8-39) overall and made one three-pointer in 14 attempts from downtown…The Monks held 48-20 lead in rebounding and pulled down 16 caroms on the offensive end…SJC also posted a 40-6 advantage in bench points.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Hurley came off the bench to net 16 points in just 17 minutes with five rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals
  • Senior Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) tallied 10 points, four boards, four steals, and three assists
  • Sophomore Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) registered 10 points, six caroms, three assists, and three steals
  • Junior Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.Y.) added nine points and four rebounds
  • Walsh chipped in with nine points and was perfect from the floor (3-3) and FT line (2-2) in the triumph
  • Freshman Nina Howe (York, Maine) added seven points, five boards, and four assists
  • Senior Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) pulled down four rebounds and was credited with four assists

LEADERS – UMAINE-AUGUSTA:

  • Sophomore Kaeti Butterfield (Monmouth, Maine) paced the visitors with 11 points and four rebounds and added three steals
  • Freshman Desirae Dumais (Litchfield, Maine) scored nine points
  • Sophomore Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) chipped in with four steals and a pair of rebounds

NOTEWORTHY:

Today's contest was the Monks' first since the Royal Blue fell in the 2020 GNAC Championship on February 29th, 2020, a span of 371 days.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-0 all-time versus UMaine-Augusta, a team the Monks had not faced since February 11th, 1980 going into today's matchup.
