Saint Joseph's Records Second-Straight Win Over UMaine-Augusta, 72-29

STANDISH, Maine – Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) netted 16 to lead four Saint Joseph's College (2-0) double-digit scorers as the Monks defeated UMaine-Augusta (0-4), 72-29, at the Harold Alfond Center on Sunday afternoon.

For St. Joe's, the victory over UMaine-Augusta is the second in as many days, as the Monks defeated the Moose by a 77-32 margin yesterday at the Alfond Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

With the Monks off to a somewhat sluggish start, junior Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) came off the bench to ignite the offense with 11 points during an 18-5 run to lift the hosts to a 22-8 lead after one quarter of play.

Sophomore Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) scored eight points in a second stanza dominated by the Monks, as SJC outscored UMA by a 22-3 margin and held a daunting 44-11 advantage going into intermission.

After making just one of 15 attempts from three-point distance during the first 28 minutes of game play, the Monks managed to drain four three-pointers – including two from Stapelfeld - in the closing two minutes of the third period to claim a 62-17 lead going into the fourth frame.

Stapelfeld converted a layup 27 seconds into the final quarter to lift the Royal Blue to a game-high 47-point (64-17) lead.

STATS OF THE GAME:

St. Joe's scored 29 points off 26 UMaine-Augusta turnovers and held a 30-3 lead in bench points…Saint Joseph's committed just 12 turnovers on the afternoon…the Monks registered 23 assists on 27 field goals made.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld was 3-for-6 from downtown with 16 points, three steals, three assists, and a pair of rebounds
  • Walsh finished the afternoon with 11 points and four boards
  • Junior Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) scored 11 points with three assists and a pair of caroms
  • Howe rounded out the SJC double-digit scoring quartet with 10 points and added six rebounds, four assists, and four steals
  • Freshman Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) tallied five points, eight rebounds, five assists, and four steals
  • Freshman Nina Howe (York, Maine) added six points, five boards, and four assists

LEADERS – UMAINE-AUGUSTA:

  • Junior Sydney LeBlanc (Madison, Maine) led all scorers with 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds in the setback
  • Junior Madeline Suhr (Georgetown, Maine) scored four points with seven boards
  • Sophomore Hope Butler (Rockland, Maine) contributed three points and grabbed seven caroms

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-0 in the history of the series with UMaine-Augusta.
