Monks Clip Eagles, 5-2

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (20-11) erased an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Husson University (9-15), 5-2, in a non-conference baseball game at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.

With the triumph, SJC Head Coach Will Sanborn '86 helps the Monks reach the 20-win plateau for the 24th time in his 30-year career.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Eagles opened the scoring with two runs on two hits with two out in the top of the second, when senior catcher Tyler Parke (Bangor, Maine) singled home Austin Snow (Blue Hill, Maine) and Ty Knowlton (Bath, Maine).

The Monks proceeded to score a single run in five-consecutive innings, starting in the bottom of the fourth when senior third baseman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) singled and later raced across the plate on a Jonathan Dube (Rochester, N.H.) base hit.

St. Joe's tied the game in the fifth when freshman center fielder Cliff Ward (Cohasset, Mass.) notched a two-out single and later scored on a first-and-third double steal play. The Monks took the lead on a Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) RBI single in the sixth and grad student Drew Healey (Rochester, N.H.) blasted a solo home run to right in the seventh to make it a 4-2 game.

Saint Joseph's capped the scoring in the eighth when Dube worked a lead-off walk and proceeded to cross home plate three batters later when senior right fielder Jake Laplume (Old Orchard Beach, Maine) reached on an infield error.

ON THE MOUND:

  • The Monks employed six different pitchers in the victory, as freshman starter Hugh Barrett (Durham, Conn.) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with a pair of K's in three innings and relievers Matthew Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.), Johnny Flynn (Holden, Mass.), Sean McDonough (Concord, N.H.), Devan Harrison (Pocasset, Mass.) and Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) combined to toss six scoreless innings while allowing four hits and two walks with six punch-outs
  • The Eagles featured seven different pitchers in the setback with freshman reliever Bradley McLaughlin (Bangor, Maine) taking the loss after giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk while fanning one in an inning of work

OFF THE BAT:

  • Ward was 2-for-5 with a run and a stolen base
  • Healey went 1-for-3 with his fourth home run of the season
  • For Husson, senior shortstop Kobe Rogerson (Brewer, Maine) and snow notched two hits apiece
