Monks Alpine Achieves Team Sweep at Sunday River

NEWRY, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College alpine ski teams swept a Reynolds Division slalom race at Sunday River on Sunday. The Monks' men registered seven points with a 3:22.25 composite time while the St. Joe's women registered 10 place points and a 3:46.68 total time.

For Saint Joseph's, the men's and women's team sweep is the fifth in program history and first since both genders won the slalom race at Titcomb Mountain on February 5th, 2023. Both teams have topped the field twice in three events so far this winter.

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

The SJC men cruised to their second win of the season with seven points, half the total recorded by runner-up UMaine-Farmington, with the help of individual winner Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.) and third-place finisher Jacob Morris (Woodstock, N.H.). UMaine-Orono was third (37 pts), Bowdoin finished fourth (48 pts), New England College placed fifth (60 pts), and Colby was sixth (99 pts).

FOR THE MONKS:

  • Strobeck earned his first win of the season – and 15th of his career – with a 1:06.32 (33.99, 32.33) performance
  • Morris was third with a 1:07.42 (34.91 / 32.51) effort
  • Senior Caleb Groton (Goffstown, N.H.) placed sixth with a 1:08.81 (35.26 / 33.55) time
  • Sophomore Jack Price (Franconia, N.H.) was 16th (1:14.80, 43.18 / 31.62) – his second run time was the fastest of any participant
  • Freshman Sam Plummer (Raymond, Maine) placed 23rd (1:27.65, 51.03 / 36.62))
  • Sophomore Jacob Gilmore (Naples, Maine) finished 27th (1:37.44, 52.09 / 45.35)
  • Sophomore Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) was eighth (35.81) on the first run but was unable to finish the second trek
  • Sophomore Colin Rathbone (Groton, Mass.) was 30th (49.25) on the first stint but posted a DNF on the second run
  • Freshman Charlie Pye (Rangely, Maine) participated but posted a DNF on both runs

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

The Monks placed two of the top four finishers - junior Maddie Zordan (New Hartford, Conn.) and senior Courtney Pingree (Marblehead, Mass.), who placed third (1:14.81) and fourth (1:15.15), respectively, to hold off UMaine-Farmington, who was paced by runner-up Elanore Robb (1:14.03) and placed second with 14 place points and a 3:51.18 composite time.

UMaine-Orono placed third (37 pts), Bowdoin was fourth (43 pts), New England College finished fifth (60 pts), Bates placed sixth (114 pts), and Colby rounded out the competing institutions with 114 place points.

Colby's Parker Crawford won the slalom race with a 1:12.17 performance after topping the field in the first (36.93) and second (35.24) runs.

FOR THE MONKS:

  • Zordan continues to excel during her junior season and picked up her third podium in as many races with a 1:14.81 (38.63, 36.18) performance
  • Pingree placed fourth with a 1:15.15 (39.04, 36.11) time
  • Senior Maeghan Perkins (Turner, Maine) raced to a 10th-place finish with a 1:19.73 (41.50, 38.23) effort
  • Senior Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.) was sixth (1:16.72, 39.40 / 37.32)
  • Sophomore Sienna Mack (Lincoln, N.H.) was 11th (1:21.59, 42.65 / 38.94)
  • Junior Lillian Souweine (Bangor, Maine) placed 17th (1:25.92, 44.20 / 41.72)
  • Freshman Lily Anctil (Greene, Maine) finished 21st (1:27.72, 46.35 / 41.37)
  • Freshman Meghan Cyr (Hampden, Maine) was 35th (2:17.44, 48.55 / 1:28.89)
  • Freshman Hannah Golden (Concord, N.H.) did not finish the first run and placed 11th on the second stint with a 38.71 effort

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's will host a pair of races at Pleasant Mountain this week, starting with a sprint giant slalom at 2:00 PM on Friday and rounding out with a giant slalom event on Saturday at 10:00 AM.
