Box Score STANDISH, Maine. — The Saint Joseph's College (10-4, 3-1) women's basketball team earned a 71-64 victory over the Johnson & Wales Wildcats (12-2, 3-1) on Wednesday evening. The Monks dealt the Wildcats their first conference loss of the season and put a stop to their six game winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's and Johnson & Wales battled for the lead in the first quarter. The Monks notched five points to the Wildcats four off of turnovers and seven 2nd chance points compared to the Wildcats zero. The Wildcats outscored the Monks in the paint 10-4 and recorded one ore fast break point than the Monks. After much back and forth the Wildcats closed the first quarter with a 15-13 lead.
The Monks opened the second quarter with layups from Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, NH) and Grace Ramsdell (Wells, ME). Battling for control in the second quarter, the Monks and Wildcats swapped leads before the Monks pulled away to outscore the Wildcats 26-13.
The Monks entered the third quarter with 39-29 lead over the Wildcats. Battling for control, the Wildcats chipped away at their deficit outscoring the Monks 25-23 in the third. The Monks were able to hold on and maintain their lead to enter the fourth 62-54.
In the final quarter, Saint Joseph's held on to secure the victory scoring nine to Wildcats 10 points for the 71-64 win.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior Grace Ramsdell led the Monks with 25 points, one assist, eight rebounds, and two steals
- Junior Elisabeth Stapelfeld scored 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and one steal
- Graduate Student Angelica Hurley (Groveland, MA) recorded 16 points, three rebounds, and six assists
- The Monks also saw points from Maddie Russell (Oakfield, ME), Madison Lebel (Hermon, ME), Logan Brown (Brunswick, ME) and Abby Dube (Groveland, MA).
LEADERS –JOHNSON & WALES:
- Grace Jaffray led the Wildcats with a game high of 29 points, 13 rebounds, and one steal
- Brianne Foley added 14 points, two assists, six rebounds, and one steal
- Mia Cruz contributed 13 points, four rebounds, five assists, and five steals
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Today's contest marks the 23rd match-up between the Wildcats and the Monks. With the victory, the Monks improve to 18-5 against the Wildcats.
