STANDISH, Maine — The Saint Joseph's College (12-5, 5-1) women's basketball team toppled the Elms College Blazer's (6-11, 3-3) 83-55 in a conference contest at home on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's College claimed the early advantage, striking first and securing a 4-0 lead. Despite the early deficit, the Elms defense remained resilient delivering a key steal. The Monks added another basket, but the Blazers responded with back-to-back layups, narrowing the gap to 6-4. Saint Joseph's then extended their lead with three consecutive baskets, pushing their advantage to 13-4. The Monks would continue to grow their lead throughout the quarter, gaining a commanding 24-8 lead off a Hayden Madore (Hallowell, Maine) three pointer to end the quarter.
The second quarter opened with Saint Joseph's scoring first, continuing to extend their lead. As the period progressed, the Blazers fought back, however, despite their efforts Saint Joseph's maintained a strong 47-22 lead heading into the break.
The Monks continued to add to their lead in the third quarter. Mackenzie Currie (Merrimac, MA) extended the Monks lead to 60-29 on a layup at the 4:48 mark. The Monks were able to increase their lead to 71-37 by the end of the third.
Saint Joseph's sealed the victory with an 83-55 final score after leading by as many as 37 points in the fourth.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior Logan Brown (Brunswick, ME) led the Monks in points with a game high of 18 and contributed five rebounds
- Junior Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, NH) added 13 points, one rebound, one steal, and three assists
- Junior Grace Ramsdell (Wells, ME) had a game high of eight rebounds,twp blocks, three steals, and five assists
- Graduate Student Angelica Hurley (Groveland, MA) recorded nine points, six rebounds, five assists, and one steal
- Junior Madison Lebel (Hermon, ME) contributed nine points, four rebounds, and two assists
LEADERS – ELMS:
- Rahmia Johnston led the Blazers with 16 points, four rebounds, four steals, and two assists
- Jade Lewis added 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists
- Jenny Gorski and Kelly LeBel contributed six points each for the Blazers
- Mary Turco led the Blazers with seven rebounds
