LEESBURG, FL- The Monks (1-3) continued play at The Spring Games on Monday with games against UMass-Dartmouth (3-2) and SUNY Poly (1-2).
Saint Joseph's 7, UMass-Dartmouth 4
Saint Joseph's (Me.) used a late-game surge to secure a thrilling 7-4 comeback victory over UMass-Dartmouth on Monday in Leesburg, FL.
The Monks found themselves down 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth before exploding for five runs. Chantelle Bouchard played the hero, blasting a grand slam to cap a four-RBI performance. Abby Carpenter also stepped up with a clutch pinch-hit RBI single that helped fuel the rally.
The offense was consistent throughout the game, with Makayla Quintal collecting two hits and scoring a run. Sadie Tirrell also made an impact with a key two-run single in the second inning to give the Monks an early lead. Charlotte Cloutier added a hit and a run scored, while Sylvia Foley chipped in with a hit of her own.
Madison Pelletier was a steady presence in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing four earned runs on seven hits, striking out one, and working around seven walks. The Monks' defense also turned two double plays to keep UMass-Dartmouth from extending their lead.
Despite an early homer that put the Corsairs in front, the Monks' persistence paid off with a strong final push.The victory marks Coach Smyth's 600th career win.
SUNY Poly 6, Saint Joseph's 0 (5 innings)
In the second game of the day, Saint Joseph's worked to generate offense, falling 6-0 to SUNY Poly. The Monks were held to just one hit by the Wildcats' pitcher, who dominated with a five-inning shutout, striking out 10.
SUNY Poly took control early, plating three runs in the first inning after a two-RBI single and a defensive miscue. They extended the lead with a two-run homer in the second, and the Wildcats tacked on another unearned run in the fourth.
For Saint Joseph's, Sydeney Lacombe provided the team's only hit with a single in the third inning and later stole a base. Breann MacMillan and Torrie Webber each had plate appearances but were unable to spark the offense.
On the mound, Rylee Page battled through 2.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits while striking out one. Miranda Northrup came in for relief, tossing two solid innings while allowing just one unearned run.
