Monks fall to Penn State Behrend and Alfred University on day 3 of The Spring Games

Clermont, FL - The Saint Joseph's College Monks took on the Penn State Behrend Lions and the Alfred University Saxons on Tuesday, March 11th, at 2:45 and 5:00 p.m.

Game 1

Penn State Behrend 9, Saint Joseph's 8

The Monks fought hard until the end against the Penn State Behrend Lions, but they were able to hold off until the last play of the game. The Monks got 4 on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning with runs from Junior Centerfielder, Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME), Freshman 2nd Baseman, Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME), Senior 3rd Baseman, Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME), and Junior Shortstop, Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, ME). Tirrell scored after Cloutier was hit by a pitch. Quintal crossed the plate on a walk by Senior Left Fielder, Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, MA). Foley scored on a passed ball and Cloutier scored after Junior 1st Baseman, Anna Gilbert (Gray, ME) was walked. In the bottom of the first, the Lions got 3 runs on the board after Meghan Petitte tripled and scored Chloe Nale, Jocelyn McNany then homered scoring herself, and Nale. 

In the 2nd inning, Quintal scored after Senior Pitcher, Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) singled to right field. Pelletier scored after Senior DP, Katie Bent (Andover, NH) reached on a walk. The Lions added 4 more runs to the board to take the lead 7-6. Emily Dobbins, Nale, Alexia Brown, and Petitte scored the Lions runs. 

The score remained 7-6 in favor of the Lions until the bottom of the 5th when Julia Jones scored on a single from Hannah Smith. McNany added another for the Lions in the bottom of the 6th with her second home run of the game. 

The Monks did not give up in the 7th, they added 2 runs after Quintal doubled and scored Tirrell. Quintal scored after Pelletier singled to left field. The Lions took the win 9-8. 

In the Circle:

Senior Pitcher, Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) threw 5 complete innings, recorded 5 walks and allowed 8 runs on 8 hits for the Monks. Pelletier struck out one. Senior Pitcher, Rylee Page (Somersworth, NH) came on in relief and pitched a complete inning to end it for the Monks. Page recorded 1 walk and allowed for 1 run on 1 hit. 

Julia Jones recorded 1 strike out, 6 walks, and 4 runs for the Lions. Lauren Rabanal got the win for the Lions after allowing 4 walks and 4 runs on 7 hits. Abby Tingley got the save after allowing no runs on 2 hits.

Game 2

Alfred University 14, Saint Joseph's 6

The Monks went scoreless until the 4th inning when they scored all 6 of their runs. Freshman 1st Baseman, Sydney Lacombe (Mechanic Falls, ME) singled to left field and scored after Senior Catcher, Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) also singled to the left side. Freshman Clara Christiansen (Franklin, ME) scored after a single from Freshman Breann MacMillan (Medway, MA). Carpenter and Junior Abbie Green-Sermak (Rehoboth, MA) scored after Junior Center Fielder, Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) singled up the middle. Tirrell and MacMillian scored after Freshman 2nd Baseman, Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME) singled to left field to make it 7-6 in favor of the Saxons. Alfred continued to add to their total and received runs from seven different players. 

In the Circle: 

Junior Pitcher, Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, ME) saw 3 innings in the circle for the Monks and allowed 3 walks and 7 runs on 9 hits. Northrup struck out 2. Freshman Pitcher, Sierra Laukka (Hope, ME) saw 2.1 innings and allowed 2 walks on 7 runs on 7 hits. Senior Pitcher, Rylee Page (Somersworth, NH) came in to close out the last two Saxon batters. 

Loretta Sorochty threw 3.1 innings for the Saxons, allowing 1 walk and 5 runs on 6 hits. Kendall Steward finished off the game with 6 strike outs and 1 run on 2 hits.

The Monks will face Catholic University of America and Penn State New Kensington on Thursday, March 13th, at 1:30 and 6:30 pm in Kissimmee, FL.
