Monks fall to Catholic 4-3, defeat Penn State New Kensington 3-2

Kissimmee, FL - The Saint Joseph's College Monks took on the Catholic University of America Cardinals and the Penn State New Kensington Nittany Lions on Thursday, March 13th, at 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. 

Game 1: Catholic 4, Saint Joseph's 3

The Monks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 4th when Junior Catcher, Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, ME) doubled to center field. Bouchard scored when Senior Pitcher, Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) singled through the left side. In the top of the 5th, Junior 1st Baseman, Anna Gilbert (Gray, ME) singled to third base. Gilbert scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Junior Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME). Senior Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) doubled to right field which scored Freshman Sierra Laukka (Hope, ME) to extend the Monks lead to 3-0 at the top of the 6th. The Cardinals added 2 to the scoreboard in the bottom of the 6th when Katie Scolese doubled to the outfield. Olivia Stinchcom followed with a 2-run home run to make it 3-2. The Cardinals tied the game at 3 a piece in the bottom of the 7th when Stinchcom hit an infield fly to the shortstop which allowed for Aubrynn Arcement to score. The Cardinals got their 4th and final run in the bottom of the 8th when Gabrielle Nanni scored off a single from Geneva Webber down the right field line to end the game. 

Leaders - Monks:
Sadie Tirrell went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI
Chantelle Bouchard went 2 for 4 and scored a run
Madison Pelletier went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI

Leaders - Cardinals:
Olivia Stinchcom went 1 for 3, recorded 2 RBI and 1 home run 
Aubrynn Arcement went 1 for 1 with a run scored and 2 walks 
Katie Scolese went 1 for 3 with a walk and a run scored 

In the Circle: 
Alex Pley started the game in the circle for the Cardinals. Pley threw 5.1 innings and recorded 2 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 3 runs on 8 hits. Sophia Colangelo got the win for the Cardinals after throwing 2.2 innings and recording 1 strikeout and 1 hit. For the Monks, Senior Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) threw 7.1 innings and recorded 1 strikeout and 8 walks, while allowing 4 runs on 7 hits. 

Game 2: Saint Joseph's 3, Penn State New Kensington, 2

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Freshman Catcher, Torrie Webber (Augusta, ME) drew a walk. Webber scored after Junior Left fielder, Abbie Green-Sermak (Rehoboth, MA) singled down the right field line. The Monks added to their tally in the bottom of the 4th when Senior 3rd Baseman, Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) doubled to center field. Foley scored when Senior DP, Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) followed with a double of her own. The Nittany Lions got on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th when Antonia Velasquez led off with a double to left center. Velasquez scored when Jayde Rivera reached base on a fielder's choice play. The Monks responded in the bottom of the inning when Junior Center fielder, Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) led off the inning with a double to left field. Tirrell moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt from Freshman 2nd Baseman, Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME). Tirrell scored after Foley reached 1st on an error. The Nittany Lions fought back in the 6th inning when Linda Shepard scored after Velasquez singled to left center. The Monks kept their 3-2 lead until the end after a strong pitching and fielding performance.

Sylvia Foley went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored 
Sadie Tirrell went 1 for 3 with a run scored
Torrie Webber went 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored
Abby Carpenter went 1 for 3 with an RBI

Antonia Velasquez went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored
Piper Zufall went 2 for 3
Linda Shepard went 1 for 3 with a run scored 

In the Circle:
Senior Rylee Page (Somersworth, NH) threw a complete 7 innings in the circle for the Monks. Page secured the win, struck out 1 batter, and recorded just 2 runs on 7 hits. For the Nittany Lions, Olivia Waldrop threw 5 innings and recorded 1 strikeout, 2 walks, and 3 runs off of 5 hits. Brookelyn Kotch threw a full inning in relief and recorded 2 strikeouts.

The Monks will face the Wesleyan University Cardinals and the North Central College Cardinals on Friday, March 14th, at 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. as they wrap up their Spring Games trip in Clermont, FL.
