Saint Joseph’s Softball Battles in Florida Finale, Falls to Wesleyan and North Central

CLERMONT, FL- The Saint Joseph's College (2-8) softball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of games Friday morning in Clermont. The Monks fell to Wesleyan (Conn.) (6-0) 11-0 in the opener before battling to a tough 4-3 loss against North Central (Ill.) (8-6) in game two.

Game 1: Wesleyan 11, Saint Joseph's 0 (5 innings)
Saint Joseph's struggled to generate offense against Wesleyan's pitcher, who dominated in the circle with a five-inning no-hitter and 10 strikeouts. Senior catcher Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) showed patience at the plate, drawing two of the team's three walks.

Freshman Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) got the start for the Monks, while sophomore Sierra Laukka (Hope, ME) took over in relief, striking out three over four innings. Wesleyan came out swinging, putting up six runs in the first inning and maintaining control the rest of the way.

Game 2: North Central (Ill.) 4, Saint Joseph's 3
The Monks bounced back with a much stronger effort in their second game, collecting seven hits and taking an early lead against North Central.

Sophomore outfielder Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) got things started in the first with a single and stolen base, setting up Makayla Quintal's (Gorham, ME) RBI knock through the right side. Quintal finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

In the third, Saint Joseph's tacked on two more when Paige Connery (Tyngsboro, MA) came through with a clutch single. A North Central miscue on the play allowed both Quintal and Carpenter to score, giving the Monks a 3-0 advantage. Connery put together a strong performance at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Third baseman Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) added a double in the seventh, keeping hopes alive for a late rally. She finished 1-for-4 on the day.

In the circle, Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, ME) worked four innings, allowing four hits and just two earned runs. Riley Page (Somersworth, NH) kept the Monks in it with two scoreless innings of relief, giving up no hits and striking out one.

Defensively, Saint Joseph's turned in several key plays, including a crucial out at home in the fourth when Foley and Carpenter combined to cut down a runner trying to score.
