Box Score GORHAM, Maine – Southern Maine built an early lead and held off a late Saint Joseph's rally to secure a 13-8 win in Wednesday's non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Hannaford Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Huskies jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter before Taylor Dumond (Minisink, N.Y. ) put the Monks on the board with an unassisted goal at 8:14. Southern Maine kept the pressure on in the second, outscoring Saint Joseph's 4-0 to take an 8-1 advantage into halftime.
Both teams traded goals in the third quarter, but the Monks found their rhythm late, outscoring the Huskies 5-3 in the final frame. Saint Joseph's strung together four straight goals down the stretch—three of them in under five minutes—but ran out of time before completing the comeback.
Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, ME) and Dumond led the Monks' offense with three goals apiece, while Celia Melanson (Waterford, ME) added two goals and an assist. Dinah Wadleigh (Augusta, ME) chipped in with an assist, rounding out the scoring effort.
Defensively, Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, MA) made 14 saves in net, while Shauna Clark (Oakland, ME) collected five ground balls and caused two turnovers. Wright also scooped up six ground balls, with Ella Highbarger (Kennebunk, ME) and Sophia Burton (Westtown, NY) each causing two turnovers.
The Monks won eight to Southern Maine's 17, with Anna Byers controlling seven for the Huskies. Melanson and Dumond led Saint Joseph's in draw controls with three each.
Southern Maine's Katelyn D'Appolonia paced all scorers with four goals and an assist, while Kiaya Gatchell added three goals and an assist. The win moves the Huskies to 3-2 on the season, while the Monks drop to 2-3.
