Monks Sweep Cadets

NORTHFIELD, Vt.-The Saint Joseph's College (9-17, 4-4) softball team picked up a pair of wins on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader against Norwich University (2-10, 1-5) at NU Softball Field. The Monks rolled to a 10-1 win in five innings in the opener, then wrapped up the sweep with a 13-5 victory in Game 2.

Game 1: Saint Joseph's 10, Norwich 1 (5 innings)

The Monks came out swinging in Game 1. Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME) led off with a walk, moved to third after a sacrifice bunt and a Norwich throwing error, and scored on a ground-rule double by Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, ME).

After a quiet second inning, Saint Joseph's broke things open with a five-run third. They capitalized on a pair of Cadet errors, with Abby Carpenter (Bath, ME) delivering an RBI double and Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) and Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) chipping in with run-scoring singles. By the end of the inning, the Monks had a commanding 6-0 lead.

Norwich got on the board in the bottom of the third with a double, advanced on a wild pitch, and scored on a single.

The Monks tacked on two more runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to close out the mercy-rule win. Bouchard had a big game, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Carpenter matched her with a 3-for-4 day that included three RBIs and two runs. Pelletier helped her own cause at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored.

In the circle, Pelletier (3-6) was sharp, tossing a complete game while giving up just four hits and one run, striking out six.

Game 2: Saint Joseph's 13, Norwich 5 (5 innings)

The Monks stayed hot in Game 2, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Quintal and Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME) both reached and scored on a single by Bouchard.

Norwich answered right back in the bottom half, starting with a double followed by a two-run homer.

Saint Joseph's bounced back in the second with a three-run shot from Sadie Tirrell, scoring Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, ME) and Quintal to put the Monks back in front.

They kept the pressure on, scoring three runs in each of the next two innings and adding two more in the fifth. Tirrell led the charge, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and four runs scored. Bouchard also went 3-for-4, driving in two and scoring once, while Carpenter added a 2-for-4 effort with two RBIs and a run.

Norwich added a pair of unearned runs in the third and one more in the fifth but couldn't close the gap.

Riley Page (4-3) picked up the win, going five innings and allowing eight hits and five runs—three of them earned.

Over the course of the doubleheader, the Monks combined for 26 hits and 23 runs, with several players turning in multi-hit games in a strong all-around team effort.
