FARMINGTON, Maine — Saint Joseph's College (14-20, 6-4) and the University of Maine at Farmington (10-12, 2-2) traded wins in a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Beavers pulled off a 10-9 walk-off win in the opener, while the Monks bounced back to take the second game, 6-2.
Game 1: UMaine-Farmington 10, Saint Joseph's 9
The opener was a back-and-forth slugfest from the start. Saint Joseph's came out swinging, putting up five runs in the first inning thanks to some timely hitting and two early errors by UMF. Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, ME) and Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, ME) each drove in runs, and Anna Gilbert (Gray, ME) capped the rally with a two-run single up the middle.
The Monks extended their lead to 6-2 by the third, but the Beavers fought back with a five-run fourth inning to take the lead and notched a two-run double to surge ahead, 7-6. They tacked on two more in the fifth for a 9-6 cushion.
In the sixth, the Monks rallied for three runs to tie things up, highlighted by doubles from Sadie Tirrell (Naples, ME), Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, ME), and Foley, plus another RBI single from Gilbert, who finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs on the day.
In the bottom of the seventh, UMF led off with a double and later scored the winning run on a single to left center, sealing the walk-off win for the Beavers.
Lisa Truchin earned the win in relief for the Beavers, while Rylee Page (Sommersworth, NH) took the loss for the Monks.
Game 2: Saint Joseph's 6, UMaine-Farmington 2
Saint Joseph's regrouped quickly and took control in Game 2. Sierra Laukka (Hope, ME) turned in a strong start, scattering six hits and allowing no earned runs in 4.1 innings. Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, ME) came in for relief and was perfect over the final 2.2 innings to notch her first save of the season.
UMF scored twice in the first on a pair of errors, but the Monks answered in the second when Tirrell cleared the bases with a triple to right center. They padded the lead in the fourth with RBI singles from Makayla Quintal (Gorham, ME) and Bouchard, and added another in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Sydney Lacombe.
Saint Joseph's out-hit UMF 13-6 in game two. Tirrell, Quintal, and Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, ME) each had three hits. To highlight the day, Bouchard secured her 100th career hit.
